Weather: observations, charts and tides
This chapter brings together what shows the weather as it actually is, to complement forecasts: rain radar, satellite images, lightning, measurement stations and weather ships, and wind measured by satellite (ASCAT). It also presents the weather charts of the official services, to be read alongside GRIB files, and tides.
- Rain radar
Beginner
Display rain observed by radars and the AI nowcast, choose sources by country in the Radar tab and read the images on the timeline.
- Weather charts (Charts tab)
Expert
The surface analyses and forecasts of weather services (NOAA, Met Office, BOM…), filtered by the displayed area, overlaid on the chart or opened as an image, and how to read a front chart.
- Satellite images
Beginner
Display the infrared image of weather satellites as a base map, almost in real time: Global IR, High Res IR and NOAA IR.
- Lightning and thunderstorms
Beginner
Display lightning strikes in real time, hear thunder when a storm approaches, set the number and age of strikes, and see forecast lightning.
- In-situ stations and weather ships
Beginner
Readings from buoys, lighthouses, semaphores, airports and ships compared with the GRIB, AIS weather ships and stations in cyan, and sharing the weather aboard.
- Satellite wind observations (ASCAT)
Expert
Download the wind measured by the MetOp satellites over the last 15 hours, read the measurement time under the target and use it to judge a model.
- Tides
Beginner
Tide gauges on the chart, a harbor's curve with its high and low waters and the coefficient, and the height threshold to know when the water is deep enough.
