Weather routing

Weather routing calculates the fastest route between two points from the wind, current and wave forecasts and your boat’s polar, under the routing constraints: wind limits, wave limits, no-go zones (ZOIs, zones of interest) and, with C-MAP charts, water depth under the keel and cardinal marks. This chapter explains the principle of isochrones, how to start a routing from the Routing window or directly from the chart, all its settings, coastal routing with C-MAP charts, the search for the best start, multi-GRIB routing and ensemble routing. It finally shows how to read a routing, get its AI briefing, and manage and study your routings.

  • Routing principles and isochrones Beginner

How NavimetriX finds the fastest route with isochrones, and how to show or hide a routing's isochrones.

  • Start a routing Beginner

The Routing window step by step: choose the wind, current and wave GRIBs, the start date or the immediate start from the boat, the route, then start the calculation.

  • Routing settings Expert

All the settings of the Routing section: polar efficiencies, upwind and downwind angles, step and duration, manoeuvre penalties, engine, zones, constant wind, wind and wave limits, crossed sea.

  • Coastal routing with C-MAP charts Expert

With a C-MAP chart, the routing avoids shallows and dangers, takes the tide into account, goes around restricted areas, passes buoyage on the correct side and rounds the course marks like gates.

  • Routings started from the chart Beginner

Route from the boat to a point, the target or a POI without going through the Routing window, route from a pivot point (dedicated page), and recalculate an existing routing.

  • Best start Expert

Find the fastest start time: NavimetriX calculates the routing for every start in a time window and keeps the shortest passage, with a start, passage, arrival table.

  • Multi-GRIB routing Expert

Multi-GRIB routing combines several wind files in a single routing: a fine model for the start, a long-range model for the rest.

  • Ensemble routing Expert

Ensemble routing calculates one route per scenario of an ensemble model (GEFS, ECMWF IFS ENS) and shows their spread.

  • Read a routing Beginner

Follow the boat along the routing, read the values bar and its graph, the route colours, the leg-by-leg table, the statistics and the calculation inputs, including tide and water under the keel.

  • AI briefing Beginner

A weather briefing of the routing written by an artificial intelligence, in four parts, with a credit of 300 briefings a year for Premium subscribers, and its PDF export with the routing charts.

  • Manage routings (Routings tab) Beginner

The Routings tab: show or hide a routing, open its details, rename it, convert it to a route to follow, export it, import it, share it or delete it.

  • Study your routing and pivot points Expert

Once a routing is calculated, study it (isochrones, blue dot, table) and test another option by forcing the route through a pivot point.
