Navigation: GPS, NMEA and AIS

This chapter covers everything you need underway: the boat’s position, from the device’s GPS or an external GPS, receiving your instruments over NMEA 0183 (one or several links), the data NavimetriX reads and calculates, the outputs to the autopilot and displays, and the sentence log. It also describes AIS targets, received on board or over the Internet, sharing to the network, and the chart tools: target, vectors, cross-track corridor, laylines and measurements.

  • Device GPS and external GPS Beginner

Use the GPS of your phone or tablet, read the accuracy indicator and the satellites, plug in a USB or Bluetooth GPS on a computer, and understand the approximate position from the IP address.

  • NMEA 0183 connection Beginner

Receive data from your navigation instruments over UDP, TCP or a USB serial port, find the gateway with the scan, read the sentence console, and the Starlink, NKE Wi-Fi box and “port already used” cases.

  • Multiple links and position source Expert

Advanced mode of the GPS & NMEA page: six independent links (instruments, GPS, AIS and three additional links), choosing the link that provides the position, the AIS source and automatic fallback.

  • Received data and calculations Expert

The NMEA 0183 sentences NavimetriX reads and the order of precedence when a value arrives in several sentences, XDR sensors, what the app calculates itself, the speed reference, true wind and barometer correction.

  • NMEA outputs Expert

Send data to the instruments on board: device position, autopilot sentences (heading, cross-track error, waypoint, route), NKE and PIXEL outputs, and relaying the GPS, barometer or an NMEA stream on the local network.

  • NMEA log Expert

Recording of the NMEA sentences received, day by day: enabling, retention, compression, exporting and sharing the files, and copying the console for support.

  • AIS targets Beginner

Display the vessels transmitting AIS, set their labels, vectors and tracks, the CPA and TCPA alarms, use the sortable list in the AIS tab, the detailed sheet, the scaled silhouettes and the chart icons.

  • Internet AIS and sharing Beginner

See vessels from the AISHub network without a receiver, share the targets received on board and the weather you measure, and broadcast your position to other NavimetriX users without an AIS transponder.

  • Chart navigation tools Beginner

The target and its position, the COG and heading vectors, the cross-track corridor, laylines, manual measures with double bearing, the automatic measure, the cursor measure and the time to reach a point.
